Discussion Week 2

When I was interviewing the 2 individuals, I found out that we all have the same thing in common. I listened to what they were saying about how our young children are at risk for some type of violence in their young lives. The children have many issues that are going on right in their homes and these behaviors are being displayed in the classrooms in one form or another.  I have learned how to look and listen for signs of abuse, neglect, and harm that is being done to our students.
These interviews have influenced me about my decision  for my paper because we need to focus on what kinds of things are happening to our children and to find a solution to the problems. We are the voices of our children and we as educators are the front line of what happens to them and how we can dissolve this problem.
I chose to write my paper on " Violence in the lives of our young children". This hits home with me because it makes me sad to know that a child is being neglected. I have been a foster parent for over 12 years for children with special needs and it would be tragic if no one wanted to do something to help these children that can't help themselves. I enjoy every minute of caring for these children and some of them have so much of a  violent background that some people don't even want to care them.  What are they to do? Who is going to care for them? How can we help them? These are some of the questions that need to be answered and I want to be a part of the solution.
Three related topics include, How does parents deal with behavior problems?, What can we do to assist the parent with violence in the home? and Why do the parents have fear when the child gets the necessary services provided for them?

  1. Great discussion

I agree there are too many children that are being neglected and sometimes it happens right under our noses, such as inside of our neighbors home or right inside of school. Teachers need to start looking closely at the reactions of each child and focus more on their appearances too. There are many organizations out in the world to help children in need of help from abuse in their home or at school or anywhere. These children are our future and we need to save them. It's sad that we cannot save every child, for example, that six month old baby that was shot FIVE times, it's sad how our community is falling apart.

  2. Joel,

This is a great topic. There are a lot of children being neglect and/or is living in an environment where there is domestic violence. When these children are finally helped and placed in another place the damage sometimes is greater than others know. I believe that it is a great place to advocate for their cause, rights, and support needed.
There is no help at times for parents to deal with children’s behaviors until it is too late. In my county it was created a program within CPS called “Differential Response Project”. They are part of CPS, but it is for parents that feel that they need help. This program allows parents that are going to distress to contact them without worries and ask for help if they want or anyone else instead making a report to CPS. They then provide the parents with what is needed. It can be parenting class, counseling, financial resources, and many other areas.
What they want to see is that before they have to work with parents in court because of neglect and violence caused for lack of resources, they work with them in a non confronting environment where parents are the ones asking for help. It has been working. Some parents are still afraid of contacting them and being punished, but the ones that do have great testimonies.
This is the webpage. In the end there is a link for the project overview.

    Good luck with your advocacy!

  3. I enjoyed your topic, because there is too much violence in today's world. I lost several loved ones due to this type of violence. We must care about the children and families we come contact with. Someone has to have the passion to create a positive impact in the lives of children.

  4. This is a very important topic. What questions did you ask the teachers in respect to being a mandated reporter? Have the teachers been 'trained' on what to do if they notice or think a child may be being abused?
